Wow that's sad. I can't believe that the Exxon Valdez spill caused that much damage to the killer whale infrastructure. I hope AT-1 is able to recover quickly. People should be more careful when they are shipping oil.
That's so sad! Because of an oil spill, most of the animals where orca/killer whales died because of the oil spill. Twenty years later, all of the oil has STILL not been cleaned up! That just goes to show you how hard it is to clean up an oil spill. Obviously, they are fatal. They harm the animals, contaminate the water, kill plants, and also cause a loss of large amounts of oil.
I agree with Dani. It's super sad. Although what I think is even more tragic is that it's not only orca's but all these other animals that suffer from oil spills. Sometime it makes you wonder why we have to consume so much oil if we know that in the end there will be some oil spills and it will have to be cleaned up for decades afterwards. Not only does it kill animals but it also costs money to get all of the equipment. I think that this was a very depressing article to read, even thought it was the truth.
It's sad how an oil spill can kind of give a death penalty to a whale. In the article I read that the female was the leader of a group because the male had died. It changes their way of life.
I agree with Sayahn and Danielle it is really sad. That oil spill killed 13 whales. It also resulted in a loss of a lot of oil. I also agree with Danielle that after 20 years they still haven't been able to clean up all the oil. That shows that oil is very difficult to clean up.
I agree with Sayahn and Danielle... This article was so heart breaking! And I think it's worse that after 20 years the oil spill hasn't been cleaned up! and that just because of an oil spill loads of animals have been killed! Overall, I thought that this was very heart breaking but very interesting at the same time.
Thats really unfair AND sad... I feel really bad for the AT-1 group. 7 whales!!?? Thats like nothing! The annoying thing is that that oil spill is STILL not completely cleaned up yet. These oil spills are apparently killing tons of animals. To kill 9 killer whales is NOT a good thing. People really need to watch the condition of the places, wherever, the oil is contained... Or else it will NOT be contained
It is also a reminder to oil shippers that they have to be careful and that they have their own, as well as their crew mates, as well as a whole undersea ecosystem.
I agree with Sayahn and Danielle. It is really sad that the body structure of the killer whale has changed (not for the good) Not only that, but AT-1 family has had its population drop! It was only at 22, (in that area) and now there are only seven of those whales left. This is a great example of how deadly oil spills can be. I agree with Danielle because oil spills can kill plants. Hopefully the seven whales are being taken care of and are able to restore their normal growth/body state. Exxon Valdez was definitely a terrible accident, and hopefully, people who ship oil will be more careful next time, or maybe they should just hire more experienced workers.
I agree with Sayahn and Danielle. Its sad knowing that these animals animals will not be able to survive on their one. It is surprising how much damage just one oil tanker can do to the environment. I feel very bad for the poor whales in A-1 and I hope that they can recover soon. To go for 22 whales and increasing down to 13 whales and decreasing, is a large amount of death for just one group of whales that live can live up to 60 years. The old males or the leaders of the group only have 7 whales left and decreasing. This is sad because they are the ones that are over 60 years old.
HOW SAD!!!!!!!!!!! The Exxon Valdez spill caused two types of orcas to become endangered and maybe even extinct! I agree with Dani and Emma.20 years later, the oil spill is still causing trouble. Oil is valuable, but it seems to do more harm that good. Though we need oil, maybe its time to look into some alternative resources.
I agree with Claire and Dani. All of the poor whales that died pretty much all had to do with the oil spill. It was a loss of a lot of oil, but frankly I care more about the whales that die because of it. The article was really sad to read, and if it really takes twenty years for an oil spill to be cleaned up, we really need a better method for cleaning up. I hope that the AT-1 group with be able to recover as quickly as possible... I hope that the AT-1 group will be able to recover at all. I also agree with Joaquin said, I really does change their way of life. It is also really sad how those elders died. Was it because of the oil spill of because of old age? I'm just guessing here... The oil spill
That is just really sad like pretty much everyone here is saying. The orca whales are dying because of something that happened 20 years ago. That's a really really really long time to be affected by an oil spill. I mean, if the oil spill had been cleaned up sooner, AT-1 might have more chances of surviving that they have now. I hope that AB gets better, because if neither of the groups of whales gets any help, I really don't think that they will be able to recover on their own. Good luck, AT-1 and AB.
This article was very interesting and I cant believe that one little mistake can cause such a big deal. I hope that they have a way to fix this problem and recover it and make more careful about there oil. It can also kill many marine life like plants sea life and more.
This was so sad!!:( I can't believe that just because some guy made an oopsie that now so many whales have died. It is unbelievable that after twenty years we still haven't repaired the damage we did to the orcas and all the other animals. (I am more sad for the orcas.)
I think the article was very well written. I must say it is sad how all of the orcas are going extinct and there is not much we can do. I think this is an example of why we should stop using crude oil so frequently. Even though we can use it proficiently, I still think wind, solar, etc. types of power would be more eco-friendly.
I thought that this article was very interesting. Its amazing how one mistake can cause such a big disaster. I agree with Sayahn that it's sad and also that people should be more careful when shipping oil. IT also took any amazingly long time to finish the mess, and it's still not done!
That is so sad, causing all of those whale to die, and future whales that may come to that area may suffer the same fate! Now there is no hope, unless they get rid of all the oil, and fast.
It's really amazing how much oil can effect the lives animals. I mean, look at the orcas in the spill, they can't breed any more, and they are dying at a very young age.
That is really sad. AT-1 might die off and the other group might die off after. I do not get why AT-1 cannot give birth to any new orcas. Anyways, I liked the article and it was a fun read.
The whales most likely died of old age. However, I am sure their heart was significantly weakened if the oil managed to get into the system. Also, the contaminated water could kill shrimp, and since whales eat shrimp, they could be contaminated as well.
They should REALLY REALLY try to clean up that spill faster (I don't know what rate they are cleaning it up at right now though). At the same time, others should try and protect the environment around the spill.
I agree with pretty much everyone that this is very sad. To Sayahn: I do not believe that AT-1 is going to recover "quickly" necessarily. The Exxon Valdez spill caused a lot of damage, and for a while, genes from killer whales affected by this will continue to get passed down.

Oh sorry I forgot to add that this article was very interesting and I liked reading it.

I think this article was mostly about AT-1.
