I think that this article was very interesting (I named my thumb drive last year after the planet!) but this information has now updated and proven false. Scientists recently thought that it could harbor extremophiles, but new evidence shows that only one planet further away, Gliese 581D, has a much better chance of harboring life due to the nature of Gliese 581C's atmosphere.
It doesn't seem like the planet will have life on it based on the description the article gave. I was astounded to read "a year there last just 3 days". It's amazing how the planet getting closer to the Sun can change the year time period drastically. Also I was amazed by this fact:"The planet is estimated to be only 50 percent larger than Earth, making it the smallest planet yet found outside the solar system". :0 Comparing to other planetary systems, our is actually quite small.
I loved this article. By the way Brandon F., the year lasts 13 days, not three. It seems very likely to me, unlike Brandon F. that there could be life on this planet. It even has less drastically changing temperatures than Earth (32 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit). It was amazing that scientists found both the first organic extraterrestrial organism AND a planet hospitable for life. Maybe we should go their and chill for a while if C02 takes over the world :)! It was amazing how two planets (based on Howard's info) can harbor life other than Earth. Before this discovery, Mars used to be what scientists claimed "the second most hospitable planet" even though any human would perish anyways. All we need to send astronauts there is better technology for space shuttles.
Brandon F: 13 days not 3 days. Still pretty short though. I thought the article was interesting, but the planet is a matter of lightyears away and 14 times closer to the sun. How would humans survive that?
I thought that this article was very informative yet amusing. I agree with Brandon Fong, it doesn't sound like a planet that we will be living on any time soon. I couldn't believe that a year on that planet only lasts 13 Earth days. Even though there probably wont be life on that planet it was a great discovery that could have definitely helped us. Incase something happened to earth we would always have a planet to evacuate to.
Ara, remember that Gliese 581D is the only habitable planet. SInce it is around a red dwarf star, the habitable zone is closer to the actual star as it is smaller and dimmer. Think of it this way: each season (assuming that its tilt is about 45-47 degrees like earth) will be 4.3 barred days! Also, remember that we would live the same length there (assuming that it is habitable, of course), so we would live many years older. Just an excuse to say that you are extremely old!
This article basically says "okay, we found a planet, it's in the cool zone." That doesn't tell us much. I disagree with Noah because it states that gravity there is twice as strong as earth's gravity, and if we were to go there, the only thing we could send there is fleas, because them and a few other creatures are the only ones on our Earth that can withstand up to twice the Earth's gravity without getting their bones crushed into dust from the pressure. I also agree with Howard, Gliese 581D has a much better chance of harboring life, based on this article: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2009/04/090421-most-earthlike-planet.html
I think that this is a huge break through in science. It could change the world. I have to agree with Noah. I think there can be life on this planet and it is really amazing how the years last 13 days.
I thought that this was a great article and that there might be life on this planet, even though Howard said the information was false. I think that this was a amazing discovery and could be a candidate for a place to live if the sun blows up, or something like that. I think that I would be around 1000 something years old on that planet, which would make me the oldest living person, if everybody else's life was measured in earth years. yipee!!! :)
That is so cool that science can lead us to finding that is somewhat like earth. Maybe people will invent technology to actually get there and see if it is actually safe but I still just can't believe how far science has got us.
