DNA Extraction Virtual Lab

This is a great interactive site. We will be extracting DNA ourselves for one of the LEAP days so it's great practice! Enjoy!

That's really cool! They explain every step of the way. They explain why they did it and how it effect the DNA and all of the other stuff in the tube. They show you all of the machines and tools. This was good practice on how to extract the DNA from something. It was also cool how they provided a way to extract the DNA using household objects so you could see it happen for yourself without having to get all these scientific tools.

I thought that this was a really cool interactive game! I thought it was awesome how you can see the cells and the DNA kind of transform in the tube. Overall, I liked the game

Wow! That was really cool. When I get a chance, I am going to try it at home, and see how it goes. Hey... What if you combined human DNA with animal DNA? Maybe it would create a, well, I don't know, a humow? (Human and a cow :P). This was a great interactive lab and I really enjoyed it.

That's was a game that is worth the time learning it. Actually that was the first time I had ever played a game about extracting DNA, and I haven't studied the subject either. Although, I do no a little about DNA itself. It is a good game and you learn a lot about the tools use and how the use them. It was a very fun game at the same time. In the back round of one scene there was water running and there was no one using the sink. The game wasn't conserving water while they were creating it. It is also cool to see what the DNA is connected to in the nucleus and how that works. I really enjoyed it! (great blog)

This was so much fun! I liked how it showed you how to use all the tools and when to use them in your experiment. I thought it was cool how they showed each step (e. g. "separating the DNA") and each sub step in between the process. By the way- the test subject kind of freaked me out!? I liked how all the different chemicals and solutions had unique and different reactions on the DNA. I thought it was awesome how the sodium solution separated the last parts of the excess DNA from the actual DNA. I never knew before that you had to balance out the test tubes in a centrifuge. I wonder exactly how fast the centrifuge spins the liquids and for how long.

Noah, the centrifuge can spin between 10 minutes to more than an hour. I used to extract DNA form mice when i used to work at a genetics lab at UCLA and it's a fun, but time consuming and delicate process.

I thought this game was really fun, but a bit dull. But I liked how they gave you step by step instructions so you always know what you are doing so your never left guessing.

te tools used in this interactive video were more intresting than the video itself i would like to learn more about the tools than the cells and extracting

That was really interesting. I liked how they talked you through it so you could know what you were doing. It also told you why you had to do certain things do be able to extract the DNA. In that game I learned a lot of things that I didnt know. I really like these interactive games and I also liked how they werent doing all of the work for you, they let you play too. Although they let you do something, I still dont think that they let you do enough. Over all I really liked this game. It was fun!
(hahahaha)

THat was an interesting game, like Brandon F said, they explained a lot and every step of the process. The creators of this game were very creative. I wonder if possiblye crime investigators could use this method to extract DNA from possible suspects. Perhaps? Perhaps not. :]

this game was intresting in a way the transformation was cool and how dna is found was also intresting

I found this game quite boring. There wasn't much to do throughout the game, and all you had to do was drag the items onto each other. There was a bit to learn from the game, but it wasn't very exiting and didn't keep you playing for a long time.

I just dont get why they put the DNA tube inside that weird thing. You know, the one where the had to "even it out" because it wouldnt turn out right? That didnt make sense to me

This was overall very very interesting, and definitely taught about good details. I did not really like this though; the process was cool to learn about, but since it was virtual, there was just something about it that did not excite me. This also took a long time, and it seemed too simple to take that long. It was not very interactive because all you got to do was click a tube and click a bottle of salt. I did not like the "interactiveness" but the lesson was interesting.

I really liked this game. I enjoyed looking at what it's like in the inside of a cell. I was king of bored though because you just clicked the whole entire time. I liked the mini centrifuge!! I thought it was cool that we were working on a crime scene.

I really like that program. It's educational and fun at the same time. I just think that you should be able to do more things, instead of just watching so much.

The game taught me nothing. The whole idea of DNA Extraction is cool, but in order for it to be a good game you should teach more about the process.

This was very cool and this was one of my more favorite interactive game and how you can see all the different DNA and how long it takes to go thru all the processes in till you get to the final stage also I like the throat swab it taught me to look more carefully when I am being tested for strep throat altogether I liked this article I also agree with brandon but I still enjoyed the article

That was really cool. I never knew that DNA extraction was that difficult. It was also cool how they provided the information about everything that you were using and why you were doing it, instead of having them just tell us to click on that and move this.

This is really cool! This a very good way of showing the step by step procedure of extracting DNA from the human body. I was taught many new things including that we loose multiple cells from our cheek every day. It would be great if they had explained why everything happened in greater detail.

I loved this! Danielle, we already tried combining human and animal DNA, and I personally think that we can only do it with certain animals (e.g. monkey) and anyways, how would you get a DNA sample?! Just saying. I think that they could have left us guessing a little more, we could have learned more!

I thought that this game was really cool. I thought the person who made this game did a great job because it always told you what you were doing and why you had to do it. I also liked how it showed us what we were trying to cure by zooming in to the DNA.

Liz... WHAT ARE YOU SAYING? This game was awesome! I loved it. I agree with Delilah it was epitome of fun DNA Extraction.

Brandon F said...

After playing this game, I can't wait until we actually do it in science!

PS: "Epitome" means the best or the leader or what you expect everything like it to be! If I didn't get the definition right please e-mail me!

It was some what weird to go and get cells from the inside of some guys mouth

THIS IS COOL!!!! IT WAS FUN PLAYING THIS GAME AND IT TAUGHT ME A LOT. I NEVER KNEW ANY OF THE STUFF THAT I DID THERE WAS NEEDED IN THE EXTRACTION OF DNA. I NEVER EVEN KNEW HOW PEOPLE EXTRACTED DNA. ITS A VERY INTERESTING TOPIC. IT WAS FUN! I ENJOYED THIS INTERACTIVE LAB.

Danielle said...

I really liked this game.... but thought it was a little slow. It took me a while to do it. I guess you have to be really patient! I did like the game, though.

Joosh said...

This game wasn't that good. It was really boring. It gave you information but the lab was slow and didn't let you get to do a lot. Other than that it gave you great information.

Fongolicious said...

Sophia, that's how they actually do it in real life you know

Phia said...

I agree with ava. I never knew alot o this info either. It was really cool. but i still dont get what the guy taking a picture of the crime scene was supposed to mean. I liked learning about the process of all of the stuff they showed us in this vidio

Griffin said...

This post is awesome! I never knew how delicate the process was to extract DNA. I agree with Noah, the test subject was pretty freaky. I never knew they used alcohol to separate DNA from rubble and other chemicals.

Etta said...

This WAS ONCE AGAIN AWESOME!

Phia said...

I really like the "latter thing" its really cool

Phia said...

Its amazing how much DNA can be on that little wad of string or something

I did not quite understand the process of extracting DNA. I understood some of the concepts, but most of it was very confusing to me.
