Definitely, as the article stated, the evolution of humans has slowed down drastically. But the small changes in the female fertility have still shown that the evolution is still going. I think this shows that we are constantly changing still, just slower.
This article about fertility actually worries me. People have predicted that by 2050 the population of Earth will be 10 billion and slowly declining. If this newly discovered fertility increase appears soon, the world will be drastically overpopulated, which means we will have to live in orbital craft or the moon. In the instance of orbital craft, bones and muscle tissue slowly disintegrate unless one excersises frequently or you create a gravitational field by rotating the craft at high speeds. But even then, the field faces sideways. Not to mention that if you spin too fast, you create such high G forces that you become knocked out or even die.
After reading this article, it was interesting to find out that we are still evolving. It may be slow, but it is still there. The other side to it is what Howard says: If we continue to evolve in the way that the article says we will, then our population will be too much for earth to handle. In some sense it is fun to know about the surprises and unpredictability of Earth, but at other times it is better to know or at least to be able to make good guesses on what will happen. In this case it is good to know so that we can possibly do something about Earth's future population.
I didn't know what to think of this article. i didn't exactly understand HOW human evolution is slowing down, so if anybody has an answer plz tell me. if it is true that women who are stout but not obese have more children, then women can CHOOSE how many children they want to have. they could want to have more children, can eat more or eat less depending on how many children they want. about human evolution slowing down, what would there be next if it continued? we've come so far from apes to neandrathals to humans. what would be next? another thing different from the human? what would be so bad if it slowed down? would we stay where we are as humans and the world would go on as it is now? what would happen if anything like that happened? may i have some answers plz?
hey its sophie again...i was wonderng...in the picture it makes the guy at the computer seem...obbsessed...is there a possibility that modern technology is obbsessing us? are we forgetting our history and becoming lazy? is that what is slowing evolution down? if not WHAT IS???? these questions are driving me crazy and i really really need some answers plzplz!!!!!
This article was really interesting. It posed a question that I have been wondering for many years; are humans still evolving? I think this might be true and that we, our species, is just another brick in a wall. I'm sure all other species never foresaw evolution (their brains were the size of walnuts). Another possibility is that we will evolve but no new species will overtake us. It would be fantastic if we could out-evolve many diseases such as cancer and defects like high blood pressure and high cholesterol. This also creates a new problem, like Howard said, overpopulation. Places like China and India are already dealing with overpopulation problems. I hope laws aren't going to have to be passed that make limits on how many children you can have. This law is already in action in China- the one child law, but is not effective because people give birth many times until they have a boy. I hope that by that time, we could inhabit the moon or other places. Another option would be to dig underground and build structures and homes there. This is a mixed bag; immunity and overpopulation. What will have to give?
Sophie, your answers (note, a lot are what-ifs, so I can't answer them):
Women would not be able to choose how many children they have. Think of it as a b-day gift: You suggest what you want, but your guests can choose anything.
I highly doubt that evolution is declining. For example, sharks lived before the dinosaurs, though do you think that they are different, even if only slightly? Nature naturally causes to adapt, and if a particular species is well-equipped (i.e. sharks), then evolution will effect them less. Which leads on to another question:
Computers and digital media are most likely slowing down human evolution. Cancer and sunlight /radiation are the primary causes of genetic mutation. Since we are not exposed to radiation and sunlight, we don't have mutated genes, so we don't evolve as quickly (the ironic thing is that I'm telling you about this on digital media).
Neanderthals were not actually "before" humans in the evolutionary sense; humans and neanderthals evolved totally separately for many a year. They became extinct because, even though they were stronger and had larger brains, their necks were positioned in such a way that they could only grunt. Since they could not warn others of disasters, they were eventually wiped off of the planet.
This article was confusing at first because I didn't know most of these concepts. But after I looked it up I was able to understand. So far I thought we were done evolving. Although the smallest things are still evolving, this is really amazing!
it was a really confusing article in my opinion, i definatley agree that the smallest things in humans are still changing. i wonder if someday evolution will suddenly pick up the pace and turn us into some kind of human superbeing?
I thought this article was confusing too. I thought this article did a great job in explaining how man has changed and evolved but in a boring way. I wonder what man would be like in a century?
