I think that this article was quite interesting, but it didn't really give that much information. I can tell that they are just giving you the bare information so you have to research more, which might not be the priority of some people. I, on the other hand, don't care!
The article doesn't get into details about each subject in the Top 10. Also, it's quite obvious why the discovery of ice on Mars is #1 on the list. It's important for the whole entire world!
That was really cool. I would hate to imagine the size of that huge star, even compared to the sun! It was funny because as we were going through the planets, I thought Jupiter was huge... And then I saw the sun!
I must disagree with you, Howard. I chose this article because it gave a good amount of info on each point. I learned so much. I liked the article on curing HIV in Germany because it said the whole procedure and how they individually changed cells. This could seriously save many lives- HIV is a deadly pandemic that kills many thousands of people per year. In fact, there are around 5.3 million aids related deaths per year! I thought it was shocking how much new CO2 there is in the ice. I thought this was important because they found a new molecule, CH4. Also, on the Mars ice discovery, I am wondering if the new troupe of scientists discover the water soon after they arrive- or at all! I also thought that the ability to produce fuel is important if we run out of fuel before electric cars come out (I hope not!). Maybe they could make, from this discovery, a new fuel that is not so wasteful, kind of like Diesel oil.
It's wonderful how water, with a bit of research, could run cars! Also, the fact that there's ice on Mars probably would help the whole world, like Brandon F said. The article was very informative and interesting to read! :]
I thought some parts of the article were interesting, but I didn't like that it just listed facts and didn't really explain them. Basically, I'm saying what Brandon F said. It doesn't give a lot of info, and the "ice on Mars" is something everyone already knows about. I also had a lot of trouble understanding the article. They used a lot of scientific terms that I couldn't find when I looked them up. I also found that the article didn't really hold my interest, as once again, it just listed facts.
This article was very interesting. I liked reading about the scientific breakthroughs of 2008, but like Howard said, they did not give much information. These days, everyone is so busy that they don't always have time to sit down and research 10 big scientific breakthroughs. They would rather get the full information. My favorite one was number 6 because they could read the genetic information of the patient. Personalized health care is very important, especially in the fight for cancer. To be able to "pinpoint the exact mutations" is a big breakthrough because it is another step closer to a possible cancer cure. It is important to know and fully understand each aspect of the research you are doing.
I found this article quite interesting. Some of the discoveries that they had mentioned, I didn't even know about. Like Howard, I think that they could have included more information about each discovery. I liked the article, but wished that they included more information.
I agree with Howard. I think it was interesting but it didn't give that much information. The one thing I thought that was really interesting was turning water into fuel. However, I could tell they were just giving you the barest information and they wanted you to research it more.
I really liked this article. I actually have heard of these things before by reading articles in magazines and on the internet as of last year. I think that if they put a link to each topic that the article would be better.
I think that this article is very interesting because of its content and presentation. I agree with Noah S. when he stated that the information is very important when it comes to saving lives and future science advancements. I also think that it gave enough information for you to understand and be interested in the various topics, and you could always search the internet for any additional description you might want. Remember, when you criticize the amount of information, you have to take into account the amount of time and effort the author puts into the article, as well as the amount of space he has to explain his topics.
I think the article was very interesting and had a lot of information, but I disagree with the order the top 10 scientific breakthroughs of 2008 were listed as. The discovery of Ice on mars shouldn't have been there at all because NASA confirmed that there was Ice on mars a few years ago. I think that finding earth-like planets in space should have been the most important discovery out of the ten because in the future, when earth becomes overcrowded or the sun becomes a super-nova, Humanity could start colonies in those planets. If scientists keep on looking for these kinds of planets, they might someday find one with life in it. I also think that "building loudspeakers from carbon nanotubes" shouldn't have been in the top ten, because that scientific breakthrough doesn't really help humans in any important way.
I agree with both Howard and Noah. There wasn't too much information, but it wasn't barren. I loved #1. That is so cool how they discovered ice on Mars. It also definitely deserves to be number one because it is the only (known) planet to have water. (I think.) It was also cool how they turned water into fuel.

wait sorry... I meant to put that comment under star size comparison thing

i definitely agree with howard and in addition isnt the author sa post to tell us the information we need or want

You really can't rank them, I mean they are so important! But isn't water fuel already? Water Wheels?
Testing
