It's interesting how now people are looking at meditation from a scientific point of view at how it improves our daily lives. However, they left out how it impact the brain, your daily life, and any thoughts or actions. They have good sources from scientist-meditators who studied the topic well and also published their findings in books.
I agree with Brandon how it is cool that they're looking at meditation from a scientific view, but it looks like TOTAL pseudoscience from my point of view! I don't understand how thinking can change the physical makeup of your brain! It's a similar topic than that of in a sci-fi thriller I read yesterday! This is on the field of Noetic science. This field's main idea is that thoughts have mass. I have seen meditation, and it looks cool, but I'm sure it doesn't have a lasting effect. Maybe I'll believe it if they prove it SCIENTIFICALLY, but I won't even let that thought enter my head otherwise.

Noah, it's not thinking, it's calming down your brain and like stretching it out. Ordinary people just rush back and forth during work hours, busy all hours of the day, only stopping to rest at night. This activity can wear out the brain overtime. This extra meditation actually can make an impact on your life like calming you down, and some studies also say that it improve your health. Also FWI Noah, you said the same comment twice.
I, personally, don't think there NEEDS to be a scientific explanation to this. If it makes you feel relaxed, then do it. It's not something that needs to be seriously looked into because the whole point of meditation is just to relax and clear the mind....there's really nothing else to it. If they're saying that it makes you feel fresh and relaxed and strangely good, then theres no need to put the hopes down by explaining logically that this isn't exactlly how it happens.
Oh and i also think, by the looks of it, that this article should hold more information on why they think meditation is healthy and has such great effects. It seems to me that so far some of us are skeptical.
Interesting... I didn't get just how meditation affects the brain, but I got the general idea. Like Brandon F and Noah S. said, it's interesting (again) how scientists are looking at meditation from the scientific point of view now. I think that a whole lot of people would start meditating if science was involved&research was proved with proof. :]
Just so you know... after reading more on this topic, I found out that they have been running multiple tests on people who meditate vs. people who don't. People who don't meditate actually have almost double the "stress rate". A stress rate a fancy term for how stressed out you are. By meditating, you clear your brain, and release tight muscles. By releasing tight muscles, you reduce the risk of having diseases such as arthritis. Part of arthritis is pain in a certain area of a body. By releasing your muscles, the pain goes away, and prevents future pain.
I really liked the way Brandon F. said this,
"it's calming down your brain and like stretching it out. Ordinary people just rush back and forth during work hours, busy all hours of the day, only stopping to rest at night. This activity can wear out the brain overtime."
I totally agree. (Before I started meditating, I was kind of... well... hectic, I guess you would say). Meditation has definitely helped me.
By the way... If you meditate, try yoga. It's a great supplement.
Oh... just thought of something else. For some articles, being skeptic is fine. Not agreeing with the article is fine. But for example, with some other articles (like a robot that might be able to fly), as a 10/11 year old, you can't go, get that robot, and test it. But, with this meditation article, if you don't believe it, try it! There are plenty of meditation tapes (trust me, I have quite a few).
So instead of just saying, "it sounds like pseudoscience" or "I don't really think it's right", you should just try it, and see if it works for you.
I like this article a lot, because I always wondered how meditation can affect the brain. Now I know the answer!! The meditation fact about stress and everything is true, because my grandma says that she meditates, and she calms down. I didn't believe her at first, but now I do!! To me, my type of meditation is extreme ping-pong playing!!! :))
Danielle, that's a good comment... I guess that if meditation lowers your stress rate, it's a good idea to meditate if you have high stress. Maybe I should start meditating... or maybe I should wait for more scientific research. :]
I think the subject of the article is very interesting. "Jon Kabat-Zinn brought mindfulness into the mainstream by developing a standardized teaching method that has introduced multitudes of beginners to the practice of meditation." This quote inspires me because this you down and there wont be that much aggression in the world if everyone is calm and understanding. This article will definitely have a good result and a lot of new beginners from all ages.
It may half the stress rate of people who do it, but still how is meditation defined? Is it trying to cleanse your mind, forget bad things, become one with the earth, or all of the above?????? People do different things to meditate, and some work or cleanse the mind better than others. All of these factors change the affect: WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY, and HOW!
