I love bball. Do you guys think it's a good idea to create a slick ball like the one described in the article? What are the pros and cons?

Brandon F said...

I think it is a great step towards a better basketball. They might be better off sticking with the leather balls, because the plastic will just make it harder to play.

I loved the article! But I think that the NBA should stick with using the leather ball. Because, the author told us how slippery those things can get, and that changes the whole gameplay. With one drop of sweat, the plastic ball became very slippery. Where as the leather ball got sticky. The leather ball also absorbed the sweat 8 times more efficiently. I think that they should stick with the leather ball until the plastic ball concept is revised!

I don't really like the idea of a plastic ball. As they said in the article, when wet the plastic ball is much more slippery and will be harder to control. The plastic ball might be good for the first five minutes of the game, but the leather ball will last much longer. If the ball was really wet (from sweat) when a player shoots it could easily be an air ball. I think that the NBA should stay with their regular leather basketballs.

I think that it is better to use leather because If they do end up using the plastic they would have to change it every time it got slippery.

I really like basketball so i think that this is a very interesting article. It is a good thing that they didn't switch the leather with the plastic. I agree with Brandon F when he says that it will be harder to play with a plastic ball.

Basketballs dont really make a difference in the game its really only the skill the player has himself its his decsision where to place the ball where to shoot the ball passing etc. the man that are in the nba usually came from nothing and played on the streets i dont think they cared what basketball they where using as long as they where playing most likely they where happy.

I think that it is a great idea to use the slick plastic balls but as they said in the article it might become slippery when all the basket ball players are sweating on it. It would cause more work because they would have to be constantly cleaning the ball.

It is great to try to improve sports by thinking of better ways to make balls. Although there are a few good sides to the new ball, the old-style leather ball seems to be better. Playing with the new ball would make the ball go out of bounds to often, and due to its slippery coat would delay the game major. I think it better to stick with the old ball.

I liked this article, but i think that we the NBA should keep the leather balls. Why change the way basketball is played just because technology advances? Using a leather ball is easier, because it doesn't become slippery. I don't think that the NBA should switch balls.

I thought the article was fantastic. But I think that the NBA should switch basketballs. Even though that the leather balls bounce better and absorb sweat better I think it should change because when the leather basketballs get stickier from the sweat, it is harder to dribble. Even though that the plastic balls will get slippery it will not make it harder because they can handle many different types of tough situations. So I think that the plastic covered balls will be much more effective in the game.

The author really showed that he had all the facts down. The plastic ball sounds cooler but I think people should wonder about what is better, not cooler.

I understood all of the article, but that was because I already knew about what happened. This article was interesting because it explained why the players disliked the ball and why the leather ball was better.

I think the NBA should stick with their leather ball, and I 100% agree with what Sophia said, "If the ball was really wet (from sweat) when a player shoots it could easily be an air ball" It's true it could easily miss, be stolen, or become an out of bounds ball.

I think that it is interesting that they are trying a plastic ball, though it has its disadvantages. I happen to know that there is a type of plastic that feels like rubber (they sometimes use it in LEGO® toys). This type of plastic sounds like the basketball plastic, in that it absorbs sweat. Frankly, though, I think that they should stick with the leather ball at least for another decade, although if they have to change it, they should use rubber instead. It has good traction (car tires) and it can bounce well. I think that if they use the original leather, they will attract more players. This actually reminds of a mod of a game called MarbleBlast, and in it you can change the material your player is made of so you fare well on different surfaces.

I heard companies were not producing leather balls anymore and now I know why. Because of all the sweat that emerges from the players I think it will be harder to grip the ball causing a lot more steals and less scoring. Even if you're using a regular ball or a plastic ball you should switch balls throughout the game to make sure it is not defective. I thought a plastic ball would be hard to use and impossible to play with until I read this article. I also thought that the leather ball would not bounce as well as the plastic ball, but I was wrong. The article was very well written and a fun reading overall.

That was really interesting! I agree with Arjun when he says that the NBA should stay with the leather ball, the plastic one should not be used until further tested. Also it would lengthen the time of a game if you had to change basketballs back and forth because they were getting to slippery. Personally I like leather balls more than the plastic ones.

Anaïs said...

I like the idea of plastic, because it sounds pretty cool, but think about it: after all, all the people who were accommodated to the "old" basketballs have their own way of dealing with it. So if, for example, a player is used to grasping the ball a certain way, well, if we change the ball, that player's method might simply not work! So, if all of the players throughout the world have a certain method, then it will take months for all of them to get used to that type of ball. It simply would be impossible for us to change it all.

I think that all of the game except for the beginning the NBA b-ball players are sweating. Usually they need to work harder towards the end because that is when it really matters to have more points to win. So, I think that the leather ball is better because Physicist James L. Horwitz said himself that the leather ball has a better grip when wet than the synthetic ball does.

Liz said...

I think that we should stay with the same old leather basket ball because the new version seems to have a lot of faults. Until scientists are able to come up with a ball that is durable, the leather ball sounds like the best option.

I thought the article was very interesting. I think the NBA shouldn't switch basketballs. First of all, I do agree with everyone who who doesn't support the plastic ball. Second, it would be harder to shoot the ball into the basket because could be really slippery. Third, if the ball hit someone in the face, it would hurt more than the original leather ball. Because the ball would bounce out of someone's hand more often than a regular ball, then game would be more of a game of get the ball rather than actual basketball. Also, the ball would get out of bounds more often, ruining the actual game of basketball.

Well i guess all i can say is: why do we even need an 'improved' basketball if it seems to come with so many downs/defaults. I think its actually wasting time trying to make this basketball, and also wasting time switching the ball constetly through games. some people might think its cool to be working with something new....and yea, i think so too......but someitmes if it's going to cause some problems or cause a controversy....then i dont htink we should waste our time.

I think It doesn't matter what ball the NBA uses. If the ball becomes slippery, it will affect both teams, so it won't give one of the teams an advantage. Besides, I don't think the basketballs affect the game much if they are slippery, as the players are probably trained to hold on to slippery basketballs.

I think that having a new plastic basketball is actually a step backward in advancing science research. I think leather balls are more responsible and we have been using them longer instead of those plastic balls that they have been inventing. It can also include into more out of bounce because the ball is going to be a lot more slippery like the author said. Altogether I liked this article but they should stick with the leather balls.

I think that they should stick with the leather ball, as basketball players hands get really sweaty, and that would make it easier to get off course.. Also, this article was from 2006, so they may have made some improvements to this basketball.

Griffin said...

I think that using a plastic ball could be could for some reasons, and bad for others. If it gets really slippery when wet, it may be better to use the leather ball, but if it sticks better without being wet, they may want to use a plastic ball. I also think that if they start using a plastic ball, it may through the players techniques out the windows. The NBA have come so far with the leather ball, I think they should stick with it.

Howard said...

Adrian, you have a very good point. Since all of the NBA players developed their careers around the leather ball, the plastic ball would require a serious revamp of the game, or mass-produce of these balls. Of course, the disadvantage of this is that you would have to wait 10-20 years before there were any people used to the ball enough so that could actually play with the ball in the NBA. This, of course raises another problem: what if they modify the ball again in 10-20 years so that there will be no well-equipped players? My friends, I believe we have run into a paradox.

Howard (again) said...

Sorry, I meant Griffin. Guess I didn't read carefully, though you do have a good point, Adrian.

Brandon F said...

Howard, I agree with you. If they release the ball, it might take years to find someone that can play well with a different ball. The leather ball works perfectly fine by my standard, so why change?

Danielle said...

Just a thought... It almost seems like cheating to switch balls. It's as if you are "changing" the balls to better fit someone's needs. It's kind of like putting a parachute on a football so it will sail into the players hands. We shouldn't modify sports to make them easier. While I do see that the plastic ball could be easier, I think the NBA should stick the the original ball. I really liked what Anais said,

" all the people who were accommodated to the "old" basketballs have their own way of dealing with it."
I thought that was a really interesting thought, as I didn't think about that. Perhaps a basketball player who is amazing playing with the leather ball won't be as good playing with a plastic ball. I think we should stick to the original ball.

I think that it's a really bad idea to use a plastic ball. Have you seen how sweaty those pro basketball players get? That ball wouldn't stick to their hands for over half the first quarter! The leather ball will also last much longer because when the players sweat, the ball will stick better. Mainly everyone who commented on this article agreed with using the leather ball apposed to the plastic ball. I really think that NBA will eventually see what our class has seen... That there is no reason that we should switch using the leather ball

I also lover bball. Using a plastic ball isn't a completely bad idea, but it comes with so many cons that it's almost not worth it to try to make a reality. In the article it said that if the plastic balls are DRY they are less slippery, but even a single drop of sweat could turn that whole thing around. During a basketball game, you give 100% and play hard. As a result, you are sweat all over. If the plastic ball becomes difficult to use when exposed to just one drop of sweat, than what about a bucket of sweat from each player on the team? It's good that they are keeping at it to improve the way the plastic ball works, but honestly--I don't think they should waste time on this. After all, the leather balls will get sweat on them anyways during the game so they will be less slippery. In conclusion, I think that they should stick with the leather ball until something better comes along. Also, by using a plastic ball, they are changing the sport. If it stays this way, someday someone is going to make it so that you can travel or double dribble. A leather ball has been used for a long time, and by using a plastic ball, it brings about a different point to the game. Plastic balls may work better someday, but it's not the same as the originally invented sport because playing might not be the same with a different ball. What if the players start playing worse because they are not use to the feel of the new ball? It will be as if they have to learn a sport they could play in their sleep all over again. I am not saying that new inventions are bad, because without them where would we be today? If not for new inventions, I might not even be typing this. But if an invention does not work, and has so many con sides, I think they should just forget the idea...At least until a more solid plan comes out.

I thought this was not very informative. I think this way because they should have gone deeper into what this new ball was made of and the ecological differences. Truthfully, I think that they should poll the players and take their opinions because they are the ones using the balls. It is important not to use leather balls, but they should find a better alternative than the one now. The pros are, like I said before, the environment and the cons are a debatably worse ball. I think the article should have told us the final decision of what ball they are using in the NBA.

Joosh said...

I thought that this was intresting but I don't think it is a good Idea to switch out the bballs. For instance Kobe Bryant is a great player, but what if they switch out the balls and Kobe isn't good. It would change the game completely.

Victoria said...

Well, for one thing, the leather ball seems to work better than the plastic one with sweat and other things like bounciness, so I think that they should stay with the leather. But, if they choose the plastic, according to the scientists, it'll work better. I would still stick with leather. Some things are just better left without too much technology in the way. Loved the article!
